Evidence #1 First Nations and Colonization Unit
Reflection on Evidence #1
During my time at Carihi in spring 2016 I had the opportunity to create and teach a First Nations and Colonization unit in socials 9. I was really proud of this unit because I was able to give the students lots of history but was also able to tie the history to current day First Nations issues. I wanted to convey the state of the relationship between First Nations and the Canadian government. This helped keep students engaged because they could see the impact of the past events on today. We also looked at current events that had to do with First Nations on Fridays. We filled out a credibility sheet as a class together every Friday -- these would come back into play for the students final project for the unit.
The unit had a lot of research skills tied to the assignments of the gamefied learning. The students were give the choice of product that they wanted to create but they had to search out information online and create a product out of what they had learned. They also had to cite the websites used. The goal was to build critical thinking into my classroom, something very important for a social studies classroom. The gamefied learning also really helped get buy in from the students because they could have some choice in how they got their marks.
I was able to vary my resources in my lessons through the use videos, songs, stories and poems. I believe this served well to help humanize a lot of the subject matter. Better than just stats or the textbook. Songs and poems helped enforce the impact of colonization. The students also found them really engaging.
I used the UBD unit model to create the unit with the end product so I had something to use as a focal point for my teaching. The students had to create a group presentation based on how colonization happened in other countries of the world and compare it to Canada. The students also had to fill out credibility sheets for each of their sources used and hand them in as well. Then they had to present their findings to the class.

Evidence # 2 potvin guitar
At Carihi in the spring I created a website to help kids learn to play guitar. They were a variety of levels of students in the class. some students had never touched the instrument and others had played for years. The class was personalized because every student was learning a different song. I did short mini lessons at the start of class on things such as stage fright, performance, rhythm, and basic theory to interested students.
My guitar playing had humble beginnings of jamming to punk songs with my friends. From their I progressed to other types of music and eventually earning a degree in jazz. I know every student who took that class will not end up with a jazz degree but I made sure that the students who wanted to learn some theory had access to resources (which i created) so that they could start. I also left behind the VIU jazz program audition requirements for any curious or inspired students.
On the website, my focus was to get students to learn some user friendly theory. By this I mean that they could learn some scales, find out what key a song is in and be able to play some basic solos over songs that they liked. I created all the material myself based upon how I wished someone would have taught me guitar starting out. I have left the website up and running. It still gets a few views daily. My old sponsor has let me know that he still has it on the corner of the board in his classroom for students wishing to pursue some theory.
At the end of the practicum I had arranged a class jam on house of the rising sun and even some of the newer guitar players took some time having a solo in a safe environment.
