About Me
I was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. I fell in love with music early and I started playing guitar at nine years old. I have played in bands and taught music. I moved to Nanaimo in 2007.I got a performance degree in Jazz Studies at Vancouver Island University in June 1015. I believe that the arts are integral to creating a strong community, and invaluable forms of individual expression. I am constantly writing music to express myself. Sometimes a song expresses what words cannot. I am not only passionate about music but I am passionate about learning. Being a student is a lifelong process. I believe there is a strong connection between the mind, body and soul and in order to learn optimally a balance is important.
I chase those small epiphany moments that come with learning something new. When they happen you gain a new understanding of the world around you. I want to help guide students to these moments. In order to help students along a teacher must use many different mediums to help a student develop their own ideas.
Technology is becoming more and more integrated in peoples daily lives and in order to keep music education relevant to today's world students need to learn about the different resources out there that are available to them. From sight reading programs to home recording there should be technological integration in music classrooms.
Most importantly my goal is to help foster a love of music for students. I want them to play music that they like but also show the value of the stuff that came before it.
I also have a secondary teachable in Social Studies. I am very interested in Canadian current events (especially those with a First Nations focus). I think it is important to show students current events and talk about events in the past that led us to where we are as Canadians today.
